Did you know that chamomile works wonders for your skin?

Chamomile has been used as a medicine for centuries now and aside its array of health benefits, it is known to have more than a few skin benefits too.

Why is chamomile effective?

Chamomile tea is effective

Chamomile-its essential oil and tea-is effective in treating skin ailments because it possesses antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Bisabolol, a constituent of German chamomile essential oil, is a potent reason for chamomile’s skin healing powers. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a sweet floral fragrance. It is used extensively in cosmetic products because of its astringent, anti-irritant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Azulene is another compound found in German chamomile. It is known to provide relief from skin inflammation. Inflammation is a response to the actions of your immune system to fight against infections and foreign molecules. Azulene inhibits these actions and help in decreasing redness and swelling.

Chamomile preparations can thus be useful in treating various skin problems like

  • Allergies
  • Eczema
  • Sunburn
  • Rashes
  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Blemishes

In fact, chamomile cream was found to have similar effects as 0.25% hydrocortisone cream in the treatment of eczema. [1]

Research has also found that topical application of chamomile can enhance healing of wounds.

Essential oils such as bisabolol and the flavonoids found in chamomile flowers penetrate the skin surface and reach into deeper skin layers. This is why chamomile is effective as an anti-inflammation medicine when used topically.

Chamomile extract was found to effectively reduce wound by faster epithelialization and higher wound breaking strength. [2] A study conducted by Martins MD and et al concluded that chamomile is more effective than corticosteroids in wound healing. [3]

The essential oil of chamomile rejuvenates the skin and is useful to treat dry skin, discoloration and spider veins. Its calming effect is not limited to inflammation. It can also relieve itching due to skin irritations.
